Visiting a Hindu teacher on the day of Holi

Question

Zayd studies at a school. On the day of Holi (the Hindu festival on which people throw colours at one another) Zayd went to visit a Hindu teacher. The purpose of the visit was that this teacher’s opinion of Zayd should remain good, so that he might obtain a good division (grade) in the examination. By the grace of Allah Most High, Zayd took no part in anything else connected with Holi — for example, in the colours and the like; rather, he regards all the rites of the kafirs as evil and detests them.

Answer

In the situation asked about, it is necessary for Zayd to make repentance (tawba) and istighfar with a sincere heart. Taking part in a religious festival of the kafirs is haram; but since there was no veneration of Holi in his heart — rather, aversion — Zayd has not left Islam, and his nikah has not broken either.
