A film about Hajj
Question
What is the ruling on watching the film Khana-e Khuda (“The House of God”), in which all the sites of Hajj and the performance of the rites (arkan) of Hajj are shown? Some Muslim representatives have even made statements in its support. Are these statements correct in the light of the Qur’an and the noble hadith, and is it permissible to watch this film?
Answer
Everyone knows that film is idle play and amusement (lahw wa laʿib) and a means of entertainment for idle people. Of the five pillars on which Islam is founded, Hajj is a magnificent pillar and one of the symbols (shaʿaʾir) of Islam. To turn so great a pillar of the religion of Islam into a means of entertainment is gravely contrary to the teachings of Islam.
