“‘Alayhi al-salam,” taraddi and tarahhum
Question
In the era of prophethood, of the Companions and of the Tabi‘un, were “‘alayhi al-salam” (عليه السلام) for the honoured awliya’, “radiyallahu ‘anhu” (رضي الله عنه) for the noble Companions, and “rahmatullahi ‘alayh” (رحمة الله عليه) for the Tabi‘un used, as is said nowadays, or not?
Answer
The Noble Qur’an used the expression “radiyallahu ‘anhum” (رضي الله عنهم) for the noble Companions ﵃; and the Prophet ﷺ too uttered this expression about some Companions upon their death (martyrdom). In the time of the Companions and the Tabi‘un this expression came into somewhat greater use, and then it became general.
