Blessings upon hearing the blessed name of the Prophet ﷺ
Question
Question: Zayd says that, apart from the khutba, when this verse is recited: [ar]إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ[/ar] “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet…” (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:56), reciting salawat with the tongue is wajib. ʿUmar says: no — there are many such imperative forms in the Qur’an: [ar]وَٱرْكَعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ، وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ[/ar] “…and bow with those who bow”, “…and give the zakat” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:43)
Answer
Because of this imperative form, reciting salawat once in a lifetime is fard by agreement. And when one hears this verse, or hears the blessed name in some other way, then at that time it is wajib, because in the hadiths a threat (waʿid) has come regarding not reciting salawat upon hearing the blessed name of the Prophet ﷺ. This was chosen by Imam al-Tahawi ﵀.
