Cutting open a corpse for medical experiments

Question

Is it permissible to cut open and dissect the corpses of dead people for medical purposes or not? Explain, and be rewarded.

Answer

The Shariʿa has made respect for dead human beings necessary just as for the living. Therefore cutting open and dissecting the dead merely for medical experiments is not permissible. Imam Malik ﵀ writes in the Muwatta’, by the narration of Hazrat ʿA’isha ﵂: [ar]كسر عظم المسلم ميتًا ككسره وهو حي، قال مالك: تعني في الإثم.
