Taking human blood in a state of dire necessity
Question
Question: Nowadays in hospitals, when a patient’s life is in danger because of a shortage of blood, the blood of another person is drawn with a syringe and introduced into the patient’s body. The question is: when a human life is in danger, may the blood of another person be introduced or not?
Answer
Using human blood is not permissible even in medicine. If, however, there is a state of dire necessity (idtirar) such that there is no way to save a life without human blood, then in such a state of compulsion there is latitude for it. But the business of buying and selling blood is not permissible.
