The permissibility of the hare

Question

Question: Is any species of hare haram, or are all of them halal?

Answer

[ar]وَحَلَّ غُرَابُ الزَّرْعِ الَّذِي يَأْكُلُ الْحَبَّ وَالْأَرْنَبُ[/ar] “And lawful are the crop crow (ghurab al-zar‘), which eats grain, and the hare” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar). From this it is known that the hare is halal. The jurists mention only this much. If some particular species is doubtful, then once its characteristics become known, the ruling can be known.
