Distributing Sweets on the Tenth of Muharram in the Mosque or at Home

Question

In some countries there is a custom that on the tenth of Muharram sweets and other eatables are brought to the mosque or distributed at home. Is this permissible or not?

Answer

This is not a matter of the Sacred Law and is not established by the Qur’an and Hadith; to regard it as a matter of the Sacred Law is wrong. However, it is known from certain narrations that fasting on the tenth of Muharram carries great reward, and that being somewhat generous in food on that day is a cause of blessing (baraka).
