Selling grain at the price of the coming harvest
Question
Question: At present the rate of wheat is five seers (an Indian unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg), and a poor man who has no grain at home wants to take grain from us. Instead of 5 seers we give him four seers, and we make him promise that at the spring harvest, grain will be taken at whatever rate prevails at the spring harvest. Please write whether this is permissible or not.
Answer
What condition about the rate can there be in this case? Give the grain as a loan: however many seers or maunds (a unit of weight, ≈ 37 kg) of grain you give, take back that many seers or maunds of your grain at the spring harvest, whatever the rate may be — it has no connection with the price.
