Giving goods worth one and a half rupees for one rupee
Question
Question: If some seller, as a concession, gives someone goods worth “8/” (?) for one rupee, and the buyer, on the pretext that “I owe a debt”, gives the seller eight annas (a coin worth 1/16 of a rupee) — while the seller is not willing to accept it by any other means — is this ruse permissible or not?
Answer
When the seller deliberately, by way of concession, gives goods worth one and a half rupees for one rupee, these eight annas are not a debt owed to him; calling them a debt is wrong and contrary to the facts. If one must make a return for the concession, then let him give him something as a gift (hadiyya), in such a way that his mind does not even shift to it.
