Kissing the Thumbs During the Adhan
Question
[Concerning] kissing the thumb at the name of the Prophet ﷺ in the adhan. The respected Mawlana ‘Abd al-Shakur has argued from “Kanz al-‘Ummal” that at the first [mention of] the Prophet’s name one should say: [ar]صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ[/ar] “May Allah bless you, O Messenger of Allah!” These are forms of address to one who is present; so should we regard the Prophet ﷺ as present? In “Bahar-e Shari‘at” (“The Spring of the Shari‘a”)
Answer
This narration is cited in “Tadhkirat al-Mawdu‘at” (p. 34) with reference to the “Firdaws” of al-Daylami, and there it is written “لا يصح” (“it is not sound”), while of the chain of Abu al-‘Abbas the Sufi it is written “فيه مجاهيل” (“there are unknown [narrators] in it”).
