Kissing the Thumbs on Hearing the Blessed Name of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Adhan

Question

What is the ruling on kissing the thumbs upon hearing the blessed name of the Noble Prophet ﷺ in the adhan? Is the hadith that is cited in support of kissing the thumbs mawdu‘ (fabricated)? And what is meant by a mawdu‘ hadith?

Answer

Responding to the adhan is an emphasised sunna (sunna mu’akkada) close to wajib. Kissing the thumbs upon hearing the blessed name in the adhan is not established by any sound marfu‘ hadith (a hadith traced back to the Prophet ﷺ).
