Bad Omen in a Day or a Date
Question
If the members of the household have a superstitious misgiving about a date or a day, should one go along with them, treating it as a bad omen, or act in the correct way — since, God forbid, if something were to happen, their misgiving would grow stronger, and that would be contrary to iman? For the purport of one hadith is that neither bad omen nor the contagion of disease is anything, whereas the purport of another hadith is that one should keep as far away from a leper as from a lion?
Answer
If they regard any day or date as inauspicious, correction of this belief is necessary. As for the injunction to take precaution with regard to the leper, it exists also for this reason: lest, if someone contracted leprosy through its outward causes, he should begin to regard leprosy as contagious in itself — which is precisely what is meant to be avoided.
