The Hearing of the Dead
Question
If Zayd, in accordance with the belief of Hazrat ‘A’isha ﵂ and on the strength of the verse: [ar]إِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ[/ar] “Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear” (Surah al-Naml, 27:80), accepts for the dead only a temporary hearing — solely that which is mentioned in the hadith of the sandals (na‘layn) — and denies the hearing of the dead at all other times, is he a kafir or a monotheist (muwahhid)?
Answer
This does not entail kufr. This is also the position of some of the Companions ﵃ and of some of the mujtahid imams, and the position of Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀ is understood to be the same.
