Ten Questions on the Hearing of the Dead

Question

(1) Is it established from the verses of the Qur’an and the sound hadiths that the dead do not hear, or not? (2) What was the position of the noble Companions ﵃ regarding the hearing of the dead? (3) What are the lofty statements of Imam A‘zam, Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad regarding the hearing of the dead? (4) If the position of the Hanafis is that the dead do not hear, is it in accord with the sound hadiths or contrary to them? (5)

Answer

(1) Proofs of both kinds exist. (2) It is not a matter of consensus (ijma‘) but a matter of disagreement: both views are found among the Companions ﵃. (3) Had any clear and decisive text (nass) been transmitted from these imams, you would have had no complaint of disagreement. (4) The answer to this is evident from the answers above. (5)
