A rooster given as a votive offering
Question
Question: If some animal, for example a rooster or the like, is circled over animals or over some person’s head and then set aside, what is the ruling on eating it?
Answer
This is a polytheistic (mushrik) practice; it is called making an offering to a deity. It is a vow (nadhr) to other than Allah, which has the ruling of carrion; eating it is not permissible.
