The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Whey — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Whey is the liquid separated from the curd in making cheese, curd and casein. Sweet (cheese) whey comes from clotting with rennet enzymes: animal (abomasa of calves, cows, lambs, kids; less often pig), microbial, or chymosin from GM microorganisms; most of the enzyme passes into the whey. Acid whey comes from souring or acids.

Basis of the ruling

Whey separates from the curd when cheese, cottage cheese and casein are made; milk is halal. Acid whey comes from starter cultures or acids without rennet, while sweet (cheese) whey comes from rennet-type enzymes, and most of the enzyme passes into the whey.
