Olive oil — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Olive oil is oil from the fruit of the olive tree: virgin (Extra Virgin, Virgin) — by mechanical or other physical means only; refined; olive-pomace oil — the pomace is treated with solvents or by physical means. The oil itself is plant-based.

Basis of the ruling

Olive oil is plant-based. Extra Virgin and Virgin oil are obtained only mechanically; in the EU enzymes are prohibited during malaxation and only talc (a mineral) is allowed. Outside the EU some producers add enzymes that may be of animal origin during malaxation and do not state their source.
