E500 Sodium carbonates — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Sodium carbonates E500: soda ash, hydrogen carbonate, sesquicarbonate. Mineral feedstock: trona (c1) or salt, limestone, ammonia by Solvay and Hou (c2–c7); bicarbonate — carbonation of soda ash with CO2 (c9; fermentation c11, biogas c14). Trona purification — tallow amines (c25), carbon (c23, c24). Capsule coatings — tallow, gelatin, wax (c44–c48). Links of 15 donor dossiers transferred (unverified)

Basis of the ruling

Sodium carbonates — soda ash and baking soda — are mineral: they are made from trona or from salt, limestone and ammonia. Purifying trona-based soda uses cationic surfactants based on tallow — animal fat, species not named, not slaughtered according to the Sharia — together with antifoams and Solvay-process additives…
