E507 Hydrochloric acid — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Hydrochloric acid E507 is aqueous HCl. China’s food grade is synthesis only, from chlorine and hydrogen of brine electrolysis (c1–c3); otherwise — the salt-sulphuric route (c4) and organochlorine by-product HCl, incl. from methanol and bio-methanol (c5–c11). Refining: carbon and bone char, resins, alcohol, sulphite (c12–c21).

Basis of the ruling

Hydrochloric acid is a water solution of hydrogen chloride. It is made by synthesis from chlorine and hydrogen obtained by electrolysis of salt brine, or as a by-product of chlorinating organic substances. Some manufacturers purify the brine with soda ash before electrolysis.
