The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E471 Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Emulsifier: a mixture of glycerol mono-, di- and tri-esters of fatty acids occurring in food oils and fats. Produced by direct esterification of glycerol with fatty acids or by transesterification (glycerolysis) of natural or hydrogenated fats and oils. Neither the EU definition nor the Chinese standard GB 1886.

Basis of the ruling

Mono- and diglycerides are made by combining glycerol with fatty acids of edible oils and fats, or by interesterifying the fats themselves. The standards do not limit the raw material to plants: besides palm, soybean and sunflower oils, pig fat (lard)
