E445 Glycerol esters of wood rosins — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A weighting agent for emulsions in cloudy drinks and a citrus coating: glycerol esters of the resin acids of rosin. In the EU — only wood rosin from pine stumps (c1); the USA also allows gum (c2) and tall oil (c3) rosin, and China's GB 10287 standard covers the gum-rosin ester. Extraction uses ketones, refining likely methanol (c7). Glycerol (c4)

Basis of the ruling

Glycerol esters of wood rosins are a weighting agent for emulsions in cloudy drinks and a coating for citrus fruit: resin acids of pine rosin are esterified with food-grade glycerol. Glycerol is required, yet the standards do not specify its origin.
