The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E435 Polysorbate 60 — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

An emulsifier: polysorbate 60 (polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate) — a sorbitol ester of a fatty acid (stearic acid) condensed with about 20 moles of ethylene oxide. The instruments do not name the fat species; Kao (food grade) states plant stearic acid, BASF (pharma) plant and synthetic feedstock. Beef (c3) and pig (c4) fat are named as sources for the class, not confirmed for food-grade E 435.

Basis of the ruling

Polysorbate 60 is an emulsifier: sorbitol is combined with stearic acid and then with ethylene oxide. The standards do not name the fat or oil this acid comes from; one food-grade manufacturer states plant feedstock.
