The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E353 Metatartaric acid — is it halal?

Description

A polyester of tartaric acid: it is heated above 150 °C and the molecules cross-link with loss of water. The commercial product is a mixture of chains of various lengths, free tartaric acid (9–18%), pyruvic acid (1–6%) and about 20% water. It is used almost exclusively in wine, to stop tartrates from precipitating — precisely what cards E 336(i) and E 354 are about.
