E250 Sodium nitrite — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Sodium nitrite is an inorganic salt: absorption of nitrous gases (nitric acid production by ammonia oxidation) in sodium hydroxide or carbonate solution (c1). Under 231/2012 and TR CU 029 it is sold for food use only in a curing mixture with salt; mixture makers receive pure nitrite (c3).

Basis of the ruling

Sodium nitrite is an inorganic salt: nitrous gases from nitric acid production are absorbed in a sodium alkali solution. Free-flowing food grades are coated with an anti-caking agent; some manufacturers do not name it, and one patent lists stearates among the options, with the fatty acid source not stated.
