The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E153 Vegetable carbon — is it halal?

Ruling: Halal

Description

Black insoluble pigment — practically pure carbon, produced by carbonisation of plant material (wood, coconut shell, bamboo, peat, cellulose residues) with steam or acid activation, milling, hydrochloric acid washing, neutralisation and drying. By EU and Codex definitions the feedstock is exclusively plant-derived; bone char is a separate substance and does not qualify as E153.

Basis of the ruling

Vegetable carbon is a black pigment, almost pure carbon. It is made by charring plant material — wood, coconut and other nut shells, bamboo, peat — and washed free of ash with hydrochloric acid; phosphoric acid is used in acid activation.
