Zakat Becomes Obligatory When a Full Year Passes from the Time of Ownership
Question
Hamid was an owner of the nisab on 30 Sha‘ban 1387 AH, and on 1 blessed Ramadan 1388 AH he is also an owner of the nisab; but the difference is that in Sha‘ban he had five hundred rupees, and on 1 blessed Ramadan he has three hundred rupees. On how much money will he now pay zakat?
Answer
After one has become an owner of the nisab, upon the completion of the year zakat will be due on whatever wealth he then owns. Thus, in the case asked about, upon the completion of the year he has only three hundred rupees, so zakat (seven and a half rupees) will be due on that amount alone.
