The amount of the nisab and the ruling on zakat on debts and on a child’s property

Question

A cultivator who also pays land revenue to the government — is zakat wajib on him as well? For the land revenue is taken by force and unlawfully. If it is, then how much, in what amount, and on how much grain does the obligation arise? If a person is in service and always receives fifty rupees, is zakat wajib [on him] or not? And a person who has a field — that is, by a deed of sale or by way of pledge (rahn) — will he be an owner of the nisab, and will zakat be wajib on him or not?

Answer

Grain grown on non-shar‘i (?) land is not subject to ‘ushr. On grain it is ‘ushr (tithe) that is due, not zakat, provided that it is [grown] on ‘ushri land. For a person who possesses [wealth] of the amount of the nisab — fifty-two and a half tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g)
