The Conflict Between Hazrat ‘Ali and Hazrat Mu‘awiya

Question

For what reason did the war occur between Hazrat Mu‘awiya ﵁ and Hazrat ‘Ali ﵁, and who was in the right?

Answer

After the death of Hazrat ‘Uthman ﵁, the senior Companions and the people of authority (ahl al-hall wa-l-‘aqd) pledged allegiance to Hazrat ‘Ali ﵁ and accepted him as caliph. Hazrat Mu‘awiya ﵁ was at that time governor of Syria (Sham); it was suggested to him that the martyrdom of Hazrat ‘Uthman al-Ghani had come about through a conspiracy of Hazrat ‘Ali.
