The lineage of a girl born six days after the nikah

Question

Six or ten days after the nikah a girl was born to Zayd’s wife. Zayd says that this girl is his legitimate child, and Zayd’s wife also confirms this, but some people call this girl illegitimate. What needs to be ascertained is: whose word among them is correct?

Answer

In the case asked about, this girl should not be regarded as Zayd’s daughter. Those who confirm Zayd are not in the right, and those who contradict him are in the right. Thus it is in “al-Hidaya” (vol. 2, p. 412)
