The Dubious Conduct of a Certain Spiritual Guide
Question
In the area of Kashmir, District Muzaffarabad, a man has appeared who lays claim to being a spiritual guide; he claims to belong to the Naqshbandiyya silsila. In scholarly attainment he has not even studied the “Khulasat al-Kaydani” in Arabic, yet he knows how to write and speak in Urdu, and delivers sermons and admonitions that are in accordance with the Sacred Law; he wears the garb of a scholar, leaving only the turban-tail. His beard is in accordance with the Sacred Law.
Answer
Listening to the gramophone and the like, and dancing; abandoning the congregational prayer at the mosque without a valid excuse under the Sacred Law; showing deference out of worldly considerations — all these are matters contrary to the Sacred Law and impermissible. Their prohibition is established by hadith and fiqh.
