Changing One’s Spiritual Guide
Question
Zayd became a disciple of one spiritual guide; after some years he became a disciple of a second, then a third guide, while the first guide was still living; then, leaving the second and then the third guide (without his permission and without informing him), he became a disciple of a third [and] fourth guide. In this way Zayd changed four guides?
Answer
Whoever acts thus without a valid reason is deprived of the spiritual benefit (fayd) of each of them. [As the Persian saying goes]: “Hold on to one, and hold firmly.”
