The Punishment for Abandoning Prayer

Question

Prayer is fard upon every sane, adult Muslim, man and woman. What punishment has the religion of Muhammad ﷺ prescribed for those Muslims who do not pray?

Answer

This is an extremely dangerous state. The punishment of such people is very severe, both in this world and in the Hereafter. But here not everyone has the right to punish. He should be reasoned with gently and compassionately, the book Fada’il-i Namaz (“The Virtues of Prayer”) should be read out to them, and a community council should be formed to urge everyone to pray.
