The distance for shortening the prayer (qasr)

Question

After how many miles should the prayer be shortened (qasr)? Also: going by the miles, qasr is necessary, but there is also a kinship connection there with the biradari (a kinship or caste community), and one often happens to go there — is qasr necessary in such a place or not?

Answer

Whoever leaves his place of residence intending [to travel] a distance of three days will shorten the prayer. And if he intends to stay at that place for less than fifteen days, he will shorten even after arriving there; if he intends to stay fifteen days or more, he will not shorten. Kinship has no bearing on qasr.
