The imamate of a student disobedient to his teacher
Question
A certain teacher (say, Zayd) declared his student (say, 'Amr) “'aqq” (disowned, disobedient) because of some displeasure. Does declaring someone “'aqq” carry any ruling in the Shari'a? In the second case, what is the ruling? And what about making this person the imam of a mosque — is it permissible or impermissible? Note: the cause of the teacher's displeasure is that the student has an illicit relationship with his teacher's wife.
Answer
(1) “'Aqq” is the term for one who is disobedient. The student in the case asked about is certainly guilty of an act that causes the teacher's displeasure. It is necessary for the student to repent of such an act and to win back his teacher's good pleasure. Until he repents, he should not be made imam. After repentance his imamate is valid.
