Congregation or Jumu‘a in a House or Room

Question

In a room or a house some twenty students each perform the daily prayers at their times. Nearby there is also a congregational mosque (jami‘) where the Jumu‘a prayer is held. May the Jumu‘a prayer be performed in the house or not? If Jumu‘a is held there, factionalism or a quarrel may arise in the surrounding neighbourhood where Jumu‘a is held. What is the ruling?

Answer

Every prayer should be performed in the mosque. Leaving the mosque and arranging the prayer at home without a Shari‘a excuse is violating the right of the mosque — especially the Jumu‘a prayer: for it one should make the effort to attend the congregational mosque. Jumu‘a must by no means be performed in one’s own private house.
