The measure of ta‘dil al-arkan (composure in the pillars)
Question
Our imam, while rising from ruku‘ into the qawma, already finishes saying “sami‘a Allahu li-man hamidah” (سمع الله لمن حمده) on the way up, and then immediately says “Allahu akbar” and goes down into sajda. Ta‘dil al-arkan (composure in the pillars) is wajib; is ta‘dil al-arkan fulfilled in this way, and does the prayer not become fasid (invalid)? The muqtadis (followers)
Answer
When he rises from ruku‘ and stands straight so that all the limbs come to rest in a balanced position, the qawma is fulfilled; the prayer will not be ruled fasid because of this. It is better, however, that he make a short pause in which the muqtadis can say “Rabbana laka al-hamd” (ربنا لك الحمد).
