The Meaning of “He Is Not of Me and Is Not of Us”

Question

[ar]لَيْسَ مِنِّي وَلَيْسَ مِنَّا[/ar] Regarding the hadith “He is not of me, and he is not of us” — what is the Shar‘i ruling on one who claims that this is only for tarhib (a warning) and carries no [independent] meaning?

Answer

To assert that the use of [the phrase] “He is not of me, and he is not of us” is purely for tarhib [without independent meaning] is not correct.
