Explanation of the Word “Ja‘zari”
Question
Question: In “Nafhat al-‘Arab”, p. 181, under the heading “Khitamuhu misk”, it is stated: [ar]لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ الْجَوَّاظُ وَالْجَعْظَرِيُّ[/ar] “The jawwaz and the ja‘zari shall not enter Paradise.” In which book of hadith is this narration found? Here [also], in the “Mishkat”, in the chapter “Anger and Arrogance” (Bab al-Ghadab wa’l-Kibr), I have seen only: [ar]أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَهْلِ النَّارِ؟ كُلُّ عُتُلٍّ جَوَّاظٍ مُسْتَكْبِرٍ[/ar] “Shall I not inform you of the people of Hell?
Answer
«Ja‘zari» means a coarse, arrogant [person] (“Majma‘ al-Jal”). See page 431 of “Mishkat al-Masabih” — one leaf before page 433. This narration is found there, and the explanation of the word «ja‘zari» is mentioned in it as well.
