Current Coinage and the Value of the Red Dinar

Question

At the time of nikah Zayd had a deferred mahr of nine hundred rupees in current coinage, ten Shar‘i dinars and two red dinars written in the marriage register of his wife Hinda, and then made the offer and acceptance. Now Hinda is demanding the mahr from her husband Zayd. Kindly tell us: what is the definition of current coinage? What will be the value of one Shar‘i dinar in terms of Indian currency? And what will be the value of one red dinar in terms of Indian currency?

Answer

By nine hundred rupees in current coinage is meant the rupee that was in circulation at the time the nikah took place. By the Shar‘i dinar is meant four and a half mashas (a unit of weight, ≈ 0.97 g) of gold. The red dinar is the name for the ashrafi (a gold coin), whose weight was ten mashas of gold.
