The Minimum and Maximum Amount of Mahr
Question
Among us it is considered to be exactly in accordance with the Shari‘a that a girl’s mahr be fixed at 125/25/11 rupees. Whoever fixes more is regarded as opposing the Shari‘a. Is this correct or not?
Answer
The minimum amount of mahr is ten (10) dirhams, which is about three tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver. Anything of that value — grain, cloth and the like — may validly be fixed as mahr. A larger amount of mahr is also valid, and no limit has been set for it; but fixing a very large mahr out of pride is disliked. Hazrat ‘Umar ﵁ forbade this.
