If the Parents Force Marriage to the Daughter of a Sinful Drunkard

Question

Zayd’s parents, without Zayd’s knowledge or being informed, made a marriage proposal on his behalf to the daughter of a sinful (fajir) drunkard; that is, the wedding has not yet taken place, only the preliminary talks have been fully settled according to custom, and some three years have passed since then. After the talks were settled, Zayd came to know of it and expressed his displeasure on the grounds that their sources of income are not halal: “Therefore I refuse to marry into that family.

Answer

If the parents are forcing him and will not agree to any other family, then he should marry out of necessity. He should completely abstain from the income derived from liquor. The girl’s parents should be advised to borrow halal money from somewhere and meet the wedding expenses from it.
