Marriage of a Muslim Who Becomes a Christian
Question
What is the ruling concerning those who call themselves Muslims and form marriage ties with apostate Christians? Are these apostates also People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab)? Is it permissible for Muslims to maintain relations with these apostates or not? What is the ruling concerning a mosque imam who maintains friendship (muwalat) with such people and eats their food? If a person was a Muslim and then apostatised (we seek refuge in Allah), is it permissible to take his daughters in marriage?
Answer
Whoever was previously a Muslim and then adopted the Christian religion (we seek refuge in Allah) is an apostate (murtadd). The nikah of such a person with any woman — Muslim, disbeliever or apostate — is not permissible; and a woman who adopts apostasy likewise cannot validly marry anyone.
