Forms of sharecropping: which ways of sharing in another’s land are permissible
Question
Question: What forms of partnership in another person’s land, by which something can be done on that land, are permissible, and which forms are impermissible or makruh? Since dealings of this kind are commonly taking place nowadays, a detailed explanation is requested.
Answer
A cash rent for the land may be fixed; the rent of the land may be specified in the form of grain — “we will take such-and-such grain annually in such-and-such a quantity,” whether you sow any grain or sow nothing at all; a share of the land’s produce may be specified — for example, “we will take half or a third of the entire produce,” and so on.
