Collecting donations in the mosque on the occasion of the two Eids
Question
On the day of Eid, inside the Eidgah (open ground for the Eid prayer), after the ‘Asr prayer, people collect donations for the imam merely because he led the prayer. Is collecting these donations correct, given that he too expects that he will certainly receive them? Further, what is the ruling on collecting any kind of donation inside the mosque, whether at Eid, Jumu‘a or an ordinary prayer? Also, after Jumu‘a people collect donations for fans and the like — what is the ruling on this?
Answer
If he also leads the prayers throughout the year, then collecting donations for him on the occasion of Eid and giving them to him is correct, and collecting donations in the Eidgah for this purpose is also correct; but donations should not be collected during the khutba — listening to the khutba is wajib, and there must be no disturbance to it.
