Rulings Concerning the Apostate
Question
Question: A certain Muslim openly calls himself a kafir, an apostate (murtadd). Is it now lawful or unlawful to deal with him as with a Muslim? Is eating with him, marrying him or greeting him with salam unlawful or lawful?
Answer
If he admits that he has abandoned the religion of Islam and adopted unbelief (kufr), or there is a Shar‘i proof of this, then he is not a hypocrite (munafiq) but an apostate (murtadd). His nikah with anyone at all is not valid (not permissible), and an animal slaughtered by him is also haram and counts as carrion.
