Islamic Law in Pakistan
Question
Question: In Pakistan in 1973 a constitution came into force which bears the signatures of the leaders of all the political parties. The basic points of this constitution are these: the name of this country will be the Islamic Republic; the supreme ruler of this country is Allah Most High; no law will be contrary to the Qur’an and Sunna; and all the un-Islamic laws existing in the country will be brought into conformity with Islam within seven years.
Answer
The party (jama‘at) of the ‘ulama’ there has an independent position of its own; this party is well acquainted with the politics there, and it also knows well the ideologies and aims of the other political parties; and before it are both the basic law and its amendments. Therefore it is that party alone which can form an opinion with full insight in the light of the Shari‘a.
