Sprinkling fragrance in the grave

Question

What is the ruling on sprinkling fragrances such as pandanus water, rose water and the like inside the grave at the time of burial? What basis does this have in the Shari‘a?

Answer

[ar]ويوضع الحنوط في القبر؛ لأنه عليه الصلاة والسلام فعل ذلك بابنه إبراهيم. حموي عن الروضة[/ar] “And hanut (the fragrant compound for the deceased) is placed in the grave, because the Prophet ﷺ did that with his son Ibrahim.” Hamawi, citing “al-Rawda” (“Fath al-Mu‘in”, vol. 1, p. 346). Putting fragrance in the grave is established.
