Shouldering the deceased for forty steps

Question

There is also this custom: when the deceased is carried to the grave, the steps are counted, i.e. forty steps are counted from the house to the grave. How is this?

Answer

Carrying the deceased on the shoulder for forty steps is transmitted in some narrations.
