A Hanafi Mufti Issuing a Fatwa According to Shafi‘i Fiqh
Question
May a Shafi‘i-school mufti issue fatwas according to the Hanafi school, and a Hanafi-school mufti according to the Shafi‘i school?
Answer
If someone asks a mufti, “What is Imam al-Shafi‘i’s ﵀ ruling on such-and-such matter?”, a Hanafi mufti should answer: “Imam Abu Hanifa’s ﵀ ruling is such-and-such” (and if a Shafi‘i wishes to know Imam al-Shafi‘i’s ﵀ ruling, let him ask the Shafi‘is).
